Responsible Ecotourism in Uzbekistan

How to plan nature travel across mountains, deserts, reserves and fragile landscapes.

Uzbekistan’s nature travel ranges from mountain walks and reservoirs to desert plateaus, wetlands and the Aral region. These environments need different preparation, but the same principle applies: minimise impact and use reliable local knowledge.

Match the trip to the landscape

A marked recreation area is not the same as a remote plateau or protected reserve. Ask whether a guide, permit, four-wheel-drive vehicle or seasonal equipment is required. Do not assume a route shown online remains open or safe.

Reduce pressure

  • Carry out waste and avoid single-use items where possible.
  • Stay on established tracks in fragile desert and alpine areas.
  • Do not collect plants, stones or archaeological material.
  • Keep distance from wildlife and livestock.
  • Use local accommodation, guides and food providers.

Prepare for exposure

Heat, cold, altitude, limited shade and weak mobile coverage can occur within the same country. Carry water, layers, sun protection, navigation and a realistic emergency plan. Tell someone your route and return time.

Responsible ecotourism is not simply visiting a scenic place. It means travelling at a scale the landscape and host community can support.
