Questions to ask about clinicians, facilities, cost, consent and follow-up before booking treatment.
Price and destination appeal are not enough to evaluate medical travel. The central questions are clinical suitability, provider accountability and what happens if recovery does not follow the expected plan.
Verify the provider
Ask for the treating clinician’s full name, specialty, registration and relevant experience. Confirm the facility where the procedure will occur and which authority regulates it. Marketing labels such as “international” or “specialised” do not replace verification.
Request a complete written quote
The quote should identify consultation, tests, procedure, anaesthesia, medicines, implants, hospital stay, interpreter support and follow-up. Ask what is excluded and who pays if complications extend the stay.
Plan consent and aftercare
Receive understandable information about alternatives, material risks and recovery before travel. Do not rely on an interpreter employed only to close a sale. Arrange transfer of records and identify a clinician at home who can provide follow-up.
Protect recovery time
Tourism immediately after treatment may be unsafe. Ask when flying, long road travel, heat exposure and strenuous activity are appropriate. Buy insurance that explicitly covers the planned treatment and complications; ordinary travel insurance often excludes elective care.
This guide is for planning, not medical advice. Decisions should be made with qualified clinicians who know your health history.
